HOW TO THINK ABOUT INSTRUMENTAL STORYTELLING

A story is a cognitive model, a thinking tool.

It provides a particular understanding of some thing (broadly construed).

That understanding establishes a framework for decisions related to that thing.

Stories can be employed instrumentally – to effect understanding and in turn decisions.

The value of a story is the total value of its consequences.

Good stories create value; bad ones destroy it.

I can help you develop and employ great stories.

Neil Bearden

I did a PhD in psychology, a postdoc in neuroscience, and was a tenured professor at INSEAD. I worked in the areas of memory, decision making, and behavioral economics.

I never published a particularly original idea or made any significant scientific contribution. I was average.

But, through my 10,000 hours of teaching, I discovered I do have one exceptional talent: I know how to turn complex ideas into explanations people remember, talk about, and act on. I know how to develop instrumental stories that create value.

I’ve helped a lot of people in a lot of companies use story to achieve their objectives.

I may be able to help you.

MY ENGAGEMENT MODEL

I work on retainer as an on-demand advisor for senior executives. I help them identify what to say and how to say it – to achieve their objectives.

I help with fundraising, sales, media appearances, significant presentations, etc. – any time the stakes are meaningful.
